The Humble petition of the undersigned sheweth as
follows :-
Holding respectively the posts of Drainage Surveyor, Clerk of Works and Road Surveyor in the Public Works Department of
beg Hong Kong for a reconsideration of the new scale of salary
A
recently communicated to us. Vis :- 2400 rising to £480 by
annual increments of £20.
We find that under this soale, our salaries are less
than what we are at present receiving and our maximum salary
has been increased only £30 above prewar rates.
The attached chart shows graphically in red the salary
paid in June 1914, in blue December 1919 and in green the
amount that we shall receive under the new scale, with the
varying increments until the maximum in each case is reached.
For purposes of comparison the salary has been taken of the
office of Blerk of Works at these dates. As under the new
scale we enjoy free quarters, an amount has been added, based
on the Government's rental valuation of quarters viz :- 5 %
of salary.
A reference to this chart proves that our maximum salary
on the new scale is higher than the maximum salary enjoyed in
1914 by $3.42 and less than the maximum salary of 1919 by
$21.45.
We also find that we have been granted an increase of
only 6.6 per centum on the prewar maximum salary as compared with the increases granted to the following officers of the Public Works Department.
